PROTO TYPES WE ARE TESTING IN 2010

In an effort to provide anglers with what they need, we are always testing new colors and patterns, some of them are winners right out of the paint booth and others -- not so much so.

Most of the new colors have shown some real promise over the last 2 years and after this year we expect many of them will be added to the line-up. Here is what they look like.

 PreviewPreview

Sea Bee Charters (Capt. Rob) 734-731-7341, had good results on proto types A-B-F & I and suggested H, which will get a lot of testing this year out of Muskegon.

Kings Around Charters (Capt. Chris) 231-343-1521 also out of Muskegon had fantastic results with the C style spoon. He says it may very well be his go to this year.

SalmonHead Charters (Capt. Paul) 616-299-1349 of Muskegon has reported that E-G-J- & L all show a lot of promise.

On the "Bad Habits" out of Pentwater, two proto types were very consistent D & J, these two colors provided almost 15% of our spoon bites.

We may offer some of these spoons for sale on the website midseason, if they continue to show promise, so stay tune.

Different Cup Colors on Nailer Spoons

The importance of different color cups on spoons for a more productive fishing trip.

A major project that has been underway and is now ready for production this spring is offering different color cups on our Nailers.

                                                 Active Image

We have found that in certain water conditions Gold and/or Copper colored cups can make a huge difference in numbers of fish that are caught.

From the reports that we received, green or stained water are the places that the Gold or Copper colors work best and our standard Silver plated cup usually preforms best in clear or blue colored water.

Any of our Nailers will be available in Gold or Copper cups to our retail outlets this spring and as production picks up they will be available through the website also.

Watch for these new spoons out soon and enjoy even better fishing adventures !

A Recap of Season 2009 on "Bad Habiits"

In my home port of Pentwater MI which is 12 miles south of Ludington MI,  Sharri and I had an interesting season.

Engine trouble plagued us right out of the boat ramp and never got any better. An end of season autopsy revealed a burnt piston and blown head gasket in the starboard and valve train problems on the port side. Top speed of 10 mph on a calm day !

This forced us to fish close to shore and work hard on the fish that we could locate. It was a great learning experience.

Catch rate per hour didn't change from past years and remained close to 3.5+ fish per hour for the season.

Top Spoons for season in catch order were:

300HS-K-40  Pink Ice Glow

300HS-K-43  Lemon Ice Glow

300HS-K-44  Blue Ice Glow

300HS-K-76  LemonFire Glow

300HS-K-23  Blue DragonFly Glow

These 5 spoon colors represent 80% of our catch

Top HorseFlys for the season in catch order were:

985-24 -  Sea Mist

985-31  Atomic Green Glow

These represent 75% of our Fly bites.

Several of our Proto-Type spoons showed promise in the 2009 season and will be further tested in 2010.

More on that later...

Become a Better Fisherman -- Keep Records !

Hi Guys....

While fishing on the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan over the past 4 years, some of my Pro Staff and I have been trying to record exhaustive information on every bite we take through each season. (See sample chart at end of article) The information was reviewed over the winter and in the first years some surprises were discovered.

Before the Catch Logs were reviewed I would ask for a list of "Go-To" lures and then we would score each bite recorded.  What we found was, we were only able to remember about half of the best lures for that season, proving that records are important.

To better understand my set-ups on a typical morning fishing out of Pentwater MI, picture this:

I consider recent catch reports, season of year,(spring-summer-fall), environmental conditions (wind - sun light - water temp. changes). I stop motoring short of my target area and begin dropping lines - outside lines first and working my way to the stern. As bites are recorded my presentation changes in order to produce more bites from that lure depth.  After a couple of bites are recorded (example:  bite #1  65' of water then 70') I begin to work that depth in a zig-zag pattern, paying attention to subsequent bites, normally moving lures down and working deeper water as the morning goes on. (10' lower & 10' deeper per hour). Color choices are most often bright colors on top, pink - orange - chartreuse and working down with green - blue - purple to the deeper water.

Enough said .... So take a look at the summary pages  1  2  and  3  which are records from my boat during the 2008 season.
