In the early part of the season, head for the southern end of Lake Michigan. Focus on the warmest water around. Some days that will be in the river plume of a major port like St Joeseph or near a feeder creek or just along the shoreline. Running baits from the surface down to the bottom can all produce this time of year. Often, spoons that show lots of orange work well for all species like Orange Ice (41) and Glow tiger roughy (65). Both the 100 and 300 work well. When the water gets into the mid 40's and the flies show up, dodgers and flies can really be great. All the 2" flies from HorseFly are fantastic. Be prepared to deploy a spread of flatlines, 1-4 colors of leadcore, high set divers and shallow set down riggers particularly with long leads. Most often in the first part of the season, fish will be found in 25 feet of water or less. Captain Paul www.salmonheadcharters.com
